Here it is...

In high school, I used to spend summer weekends and vacations with a friend and his family in Northport, Nova Scotia, a small, quaint, picturesque fishing village with beautiful sandy beaches and warm water on the Northumberland Strait near Pugwash. We helped his father fish lobster. All the kids, both locals and cottagers, used to hang out at the fishermen’s wharf. A couple of the older kids had cars. Amongst all of us, I had only a few 8-track tapes. They got played all summer long:

--Lighthouse “Sunny Days”
--Deep Purple “Machine Head”
--Alice Cooper “Billion Dollar Babies”
--Beach Boys (unknown)
--Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show “Greatest Hits”
--K-Tel’s “22 Fantastic Hits”
--April Wine’s “Electric Jewels” and “Live ’74”

I was familiar with the other bands but had never heard of April Wine before. I immediately fell in love with them. Thank you to my friend “Scott” for introducing me to April Wine!

“Electric Jewels” and “Live ’74” and later “Stand Back” became, as one MB member suggested, “the soundtrack to my life”.

If memory serves me correct, the single “I Wouldn’t Want to Lose Your Love” received significant air play in late 1974. I loved that song and could hardly wait for the album to come out. I picked it up in early January and shortly afterward, I got hurt playing hockey and missed two weeks of school. A brand new album, home alone during the day—I played that album to death! Loud! I would not use the balancing arm of my turntable so the record just kept playing over and over again until I turned it over to play the other side. I cranked that sucker! In the evenings when my family was home, I would listen to it with headphones in my bedroom with the door closed. Many times my father would come into my room and tell me to turn the headphones down!

I have always admired how April Wine could combine rockers like “Oowatanite” with ballads like “I Wouldn’t Want to Lose Your Love” and often a song like “Slow Poke” highlighting Myles wicked sense of humour.

My first April Wine concert was at the Moncton Coliseum in the spring of 1975 for the Stand Back tour. The only previous rock concert I had been to was the Stampeders which did not have much of a light show. After the lights were dimmed, someone on the stage yelled: “Stand Back!” and fired off the cannon that is on the album cover, the band broke into “Oowatanite” with what became the trademark flashing lights and police beacons. They had me hooked on the first song! The music was great as was the light show. I will always visualize April Wine flooded with pink lights like on the Live ’74 album cover. Jerry’s drum solo blew me away (and still did until he retired. One of these days, I intend to burn all his drum solos onto one CD so I can listen to the evolution of it).

I went to the concert with two friends from school who sat to my right. Shortly thereafter four guys I did not know sat to my left and immediately hauled a joint so big it looked like something you would see in a Cheech & Chong movie!

Thereafter, I attended all April Wine concerts in Moncton up to 1978. I loved the Mad Hatter on the stage for “Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy” tour. I saw them again in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1981 or 1982. I saw them at the Playhouse in Fredericton in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007. I got my photo taken with the band in 2007. They have not been back to “Freddy Beach” since then. I would love to see them come back to Fredericton soon but I am prepared to do a road trip to see them again. I would especially like to meet my message board friends too.

Well that’s my story of my all-time favourite band.
