What people are saying about Roughly Speaking
Once the crowds have gone home, musicians get to play for themselves. Like it or not, that's the position in which fading CanRock legends April Wine find themselves these days. But to their credit, they make the most of that newfound freedom on their latest disc Roughly Speaking.
This lean, no-frills set -- the 16th studio release of the band's 36-year career and their first disc since 2001's Back to the Mansion -- is an impressively varied and adventurous offering.
Sheila is a nice slice of bouncy Beatle-pop. You Don't Even Know (How I Love You So) has a '50s doo-wop feel. If You're Coming (I'm Out of Here) is a back-porch country ditty. A bluesy cover of Willie's Night Life ups the roots factor. And the '70s-style power-pop of I Am, I Am, along with the bluesy Roller-boogie of Saw Someone (That Wasn't There) shows Myles Goodwyn and co. still like to rock now and then.
At just 25 minutes, it's a little slight. But roughly speaking, it's one of April Wine's more interesting comeback efforts.
